Ask AI about a spreadsheet or PDF

NanthAI ·

You can ask an AI questions about a PDF in NanthAI Edge's free tier by attaching the file to a chat. Working with a spreadsheet is a Pro feature. Pro adds the calculations, the charts, a knowledge base for files you use again and the ability to edit Excel workbooks.

Can you ask about a PDF for free?

Yes. The free tier includes image and PDF uploads. Tap the + button next to the text field, attach the PDF, then ask your question in ordinary words, such as "What does section 3 say about refunds?" The AI reads the attached file and answers from it.

Use this for a single document you need once. If you will ask about the same file again, or across several files, use the knowledge base described below.

What does Pro add?

Pro adds three things for files.

  1. Knowledge base. Upload PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets or text files once and keep them in Settings. You can attach them to any chat or scheduled task later. You can view, rename and remove them at any time. See the Knowledge Base page.
  2. Analysis, code and charts. Attach a spreadsheet, CSV or text file from your device or from your knowledge base, then ask a question. Edge runs the calculations in an isolated workspace and explains the result. Charts appear in the chat, and cleaned data or reports can be downloaded. See the Analysis, Code & Charts page.
  3. Excel workbooks. Pro's document tools can read bounded sheets and ranges from an uploaded workbook, make targeted edits while keeping the rest of the workbook, and create new XLSX files. See the Documents, Spreadsheets & Presentations page.

Which should you use?

  • To ask what a PDF says: attach it to the chat. This works on the free tier.
  • To add up a column, find a trend or clean up a CSV: use analysis with Pro.
  • To keep a set of reports or spreadsheets for repeated questions: put them in the knowledge base with Pro.
  • To change or create an Excel workbook: use the Pro document tools.

How do you analyse a spreadsheet?

  1. Attach the spreadsheet or CSV from your device, or choose it from your knowledge base.
  2. Describe the question in plain words. For example: "Which region had the lowest margin in Q3, and by how much?"
  3. Read the explanation. If the answer includes a chart, it appears in the conversation as an image.
  4. Download any cleaned CSV or report from the chat. Files that are exported appear as cards in the conversation and stay attached to it.

What are the limits?

  • Code runs in an isolated workspace, not on your device. The session is temporary, so anything you want to keep must be exported as a file.
  • Charts are images. They are not an interactive chart editor.
  • Only the files you select for the task are staged into the workspace.
  • Large or package-heavy jobs can move to a cloud sandbox. That sandbox has limits on execution, files and resources.

How do you make the question precise?

Name the sheet, column or PDF section you mean, then say what you want back. “Compare the totals on the January and February sheets” gives the model a clearer task than “analyse this”. If the file uses abbreviations or a particular definition of margin, include that explanation in your question.

For a PDF answer, ask for the relevant section as well as the explanation so you can check it against the document. For a spreadsheet calculation, ask which rows and columns were used. Compare a small sample with the source file before relying on the larger result.
